Gas Tax Hike Could Banish Parkway Tolls
Bad Credit Credit Creditres High-ranking officials dramatically raised the stakes in the state's gas tax talks yesterday by suggesting some of the money from the proposed increase could be used to eliminate tolls on the Garden State Parkway.
Increasing the gas tax by 15 cents a gallon was expected to bring in $49 billion in the next 10 years. Plans called for part of that money to be used to eliminate tolls on the Garden State Parkway, but administration officials said that with the gas tax increase now off the table, the tolls would remain.
Bad Consolidation Credit Debt In tandem with the proposed gas tax increase, state officials also said they are considering imposing fare hikes on NJ Transit's 400,000 bus, train and subway riders.
Before anyone believes career politicians will actually use the tax money for the benefit of fishermen should read the intent history of the gasoline tax, Garden State Parkway tolls, the $2 parking fee in Atlantic City, the 12 percent hotel tax in Atlantic City, the sales tax, and the bridge and tunnel tolls. This is a tax that will only increase in the future without anyone realizing any benefit.
Bad Company Credit Repair A senior legislative official said the idea of eliminating Parkway tolls came up at the end of last week and is being considered as a way of softening the political hit among voters who might be angered by the proposal to raise the gas tax by 12.5 cents per gallon, more than doubling it.

Bad Car Credit Loan "There is a lot of merit to it and a lot of support for it," a senior administration official said.
The elimination of Parkway tolls became a prominent issue in the 2001 gubernatorial campaign when McGreevey's opponent, Bret Schundler, promised to eliminate all Parkway tolls during his first nine months in office. At that time, McGreevey said it could be done within seven years, but his administration has since backed away from that goal.
Bad Credit Loan Mortgage But for now, the Parkway toll plan is pretty much an idea in its early stages getting kicked around, and officials have not evaluated how it would affect the recent highway authority merger, the Parkway's debt or the operation of E-ZPass.
Auto Bad Credit Loan News of the Parkway toll discussions leaked out yesterday, just as a special commission appointed by Gov. James E. McGreevey unveiled its comprehensive plan for raising the gas tax to replenish the Transportation Trust Fund, the program that pays for major road and mass transit projects.
Bad Credit Mortgage Refinance In making the case for a 12.5-cent-per-gallon increase in the gas tax, officials said motorists should not bear the entire burden of bailing out New Jersey's financially strapped transportation system.
Bad Credit Refinance To that end, transit officials said they would consider adopting a policy to impose fare increases tied to inflation sometime next year. The increases, which would go into effect every two years, would amount to about 3 percent, officials said. Last year, transit fares went up an average of 10 percent, which was the first increase in more than a decade.
Bad Credit Mortgage Second "It is wise, it is appropriate and it is entirely fair for all of the users, whether they be auto users or transit system users ... to contribute to the cause," NJ Transit Executive Director George Warrington said.
Bad Credit Loan Student The prospect of a fare increase drew criticism from one watchdog group.
Bad Card Credit "As a matter of policy, we evaluate each proposed increase on its own merits, but in principle we're against any formulaic, non-thinking, automatic hands-off increases," said Doug Bowen, vice president of the New Jersey Association of Railroad Passengers.
Bad Credit Financing State officials also expect to run into opposition on the gas tax increase. Already there is a Web site protesting the hike that claims to have collected more than 6,000 signatures on petitions fighting the plan.
Bad Credit Home Loan Mortgage Against this backdrop, officials are eager to come up with ways to sell the increase to the public -- and to legislators whose votes are needed to pass the plan.
Bad Credit Loan People Officials at yesterday's press conference in Newark cited the state's deteriorating transportation system and the crisis confronting the trust fund, which has a greater and greater share of its money going toward paying off debt.
Bad Card Credit Credit People In 2006, annual debt payments are going to surpass $800 million. Unless the state comes up with new revenue by then, officials said, they would have to stop planning new projects.
Bad Credit Guaranteed Loan "Deterioration will come fast and it will come hard," Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere said. "The program we proposed here is bold. It may not be popular, but we believe that it is necessary."
Bad Credit Refinancing The McGreevey administration is hoping to get the gas tax increase approved during the lame-duck session of the Legislature, before the newly elected members take office.
Bad Credit Equity Home Loan The idea to eliminate Parkway tolls may ease the way, especially since many prominent Republicans who have questioned the gas tax plan represent parts of the state through which the Parkway runs.
Bad Credit Loan Payday Officials expect the proposal to be popular among drivers. Moreover, it would give the governor a boost: He would be living up to a campaign promise.
Bad Credit Repair A senior legislative leader said the state might adopt a 13-cent-per-gallon increase in the gas tax and use three cents of that to get rid of the tolls. Three cents on the gas tax rate would generate about $150 million a year.
Bad Credit Home Loan Uk Officials have not figured out how much it would cost to remove the toll plazas. In the past, studies have estimated it would cost more than $100 million.
2nd Bad Credit Mortgage The New Jersey Turnpike Authority this year took over control of running the Parkway. No one is suggesting any changes in tolls on the Turnpike.
Bad Credit Loan Unsecured Senate Co-President John Bennett (R-Monmouth) had not heard about the proposal yesterday, said his spokeswoman, Carolyn Barc.
Bad Consolidation Credit Loan "Nobody's discussed anything with him," she said. And while he is willing to listen to the idea, she said, "He personally still will not vote for the gas tax."
