Vivato's Largest Municipal Wireless Network Launches at Spokane's Hoopfest
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 2004--Vivato, an extended reach wireless systems infrastructure company, today announced that its 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Base Stations have "gone live" for SpokaneHotZone, the nation's largest municipal Wi-Fi network deployment covering a 100-square block downtown area. The launch of the network is in conjunction with Spokane's Hoopfest basketball tournament, scheduled for June 26-27. Hoopfest is the largest 3-on-3 basketball event in the world, with 6,200 teams, 140,000 players and fans, and 400 courts spanning 40 downtown city blocks. The SpokaneHotZone will have a tent at the tournament where spectators and players can surf the HotZone, check out scores and player stats using laptops provided by Itronix. Also, members of a SpokaneHotZone street team will be roving through downtown with Itronix GoBook Tablets helping people log onto the HotZone.
Vivato's 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Base Station is designed to extend the reach of Wi-Fi through its unique PacketSteering(TM) technology that directs Wi-Fi capacity to standard 802.11b clients through an electronically-controlled, phased array antenna, enabling unprecedented coverage. This unique architecture allows Vivato's base stations to transmit high-gain wireless beams over a distance of 2.5 miles outdoors with direct line of sight, and shorter distances without direct line of sight.
The downtown deployment is the first of Spokane's multi-phase wireless project, and will ultimately expand wireless connectivity to the area around the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, the South Hill medical complexes and the University District.
"The City of Spokane is very excited to launch the first phase of the SpokaneHotZone at Hoopfest," said Robin Toth, economic development project manager for the City of Spokane. Vivato's Wi-Fi solutions have enabled us to deploy a cost-effective wireless network that will be used for City communication needs and public wireless Internet access."
SpokaneHotZone is the City's dual purpose wireless network providing seamless Internet broadband access to both public users and to a private domain - comprised of city municipal employees working in public safety, mobile workforce, security ambassadorships and automated parking enforcement. The project creates an attractive technology environment for residents, local businesses and visitors.
"The City of Spokane has an innovative vision for technology and we're pleased to be able to provide the infrastructure for its Wi-Fi network," said Kevin Ryan, vice president of marketing and business development for Vivato. "Vivato's long range capabilities proved to be a perfect match for Spokane's technology needs and we're excited to be a key player in this milestone event for the Wi-Fi industry."
