In Reversal, EPA To Push Cleanup Of Power Plants
Bad Credit Credit Creditres In an important turnabout, the Bush administration has decided to bring new court actions to force cleanups of aging coal-fired power plants under a provision of the Clean Air Act that officials and their industry allies have sought to weaken for the past three years.
That's why the seemingly dry and political struggle going on in the Senate over whether to confirm former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt as the EPA's next administrator should matter to all Californians. Like former EPA Administrator Christie Whitman, who resigned four months ago, Leavitt is considered a moderate. So far, senators have unfortunately let Leavitt dodge questions about the administration' fired power plants, its orders to slow down Superfund toxic site cleanups and reversal of the president's campaign pledge to regulate carbon dioxide emissions.
Bad Consolidation Credit Debt Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Mike Leavitt told reporters yesterday that the government will aggressively enforce the existing rule until the courts resolve a legal challenge to a new version of the enforcement policy. The new version is strongly preferred by the utility industry but has been sharply criticized by environmentalists and state attorneys general from the Northeast and Midwest.

Bad Company Credit Repair Under the New Source Review provisions of the Clean Air Act, plants and refineries built before 1970 are required to install costly "scrubbers" only if they undertake extensive improvements that boost power production and pollution. Industry officials have long complained that the distinction between "routine maintenance" and more substantial improvements is too vague. The new approach, adopted by the EPA in August, would give utilities substantially more leeway to upgrade their plants without having to install the anti-pollution equipment.
The cleanup, which has an estimated cost of $400, 000, is expected to be completed by the end of June. "This facility contains large amounts of asbestos material that were not disposed of properly, so it's imperative that EPA make sure it gets cleaned up quickly to eliminate any potential threat to the community, " said EPA Regional Administrator Alan J. Steinberg. "EPA is taking swift action to address the problem, working closely with state and local agencies."
