Karaidos jump starts Norse
Karaidos jump starts Norse
Date 4/11/2002 12:00 AM | Topic: SportsThe Luther baseball team is off to its best conference start in five years behind second baseman Jason Karaidos ('03). Karaidos went 10-13 with three doubles, a homerun, four RBI and seven runs scored over four games. For his efforts, Karaidos was named IIAC Conference Athlete of the Week.
Luther's overall record is now 6-8 after posting a 3-7 non-conference mark on the team's spring break tour of Florida.
This week the Norse split a pair of exciting games against the Simpson Storm (11-12, 3-2) and followed that up with a sweep of Loras in Dubuque (15-1, 7-4).
Luther and Simpson played an exciting doubleheader, with both teams taking a game. The opening match was a slugfest.
The Storm took an 8-2 lead after a five-run fourth inning, but Luther tied it up in the bottom half with six runs all coming after two outs. Simpson won out despite the Norse efforts in the bottom of the ninth.
The second game flew by at a much quicker pace with Ryan Conway ('03) breezing through the Simpson batters. Conway, who missed all of last season due to injury, picked up his second win in 2002, giving up only one earned run on just six hits, while striking out six.
Later in the week, the Norse banged 18 hits against Loras and destroyed the Duhawks 15-1 in the opening game. The game got out of hand, as Luther capitalized on six Loras errors during the game. The Norse scored six times in the fifth inning and six more in the seventh, providing John Jaeger ('05) with ample run support. The freshman went the distance on the hill for Luther.
Luther kept ripping the Duhawk pitching in the nightcap. Karaidos, Brad Paulsrud ('04) and Jason Stravers ('04) each went 3-4. Karaidos went yard in the first for his first homerun of the season.
Luther hosts doubleheaders against Central and Coe this week before traveling to the Twin Cities to play the 2001 National Champions, St. Thomas University.
