Taxpayer "Phishing" Scams Still Prevalent, IRS Warns

Bad Consolidation Credit Debt (AXcess News) Washington - The Internal Revenue Service today advised taxpayers to stay vigilant when it comes to a pervasive email scam asking for intrusive personal information. The email, which claims to be from the IRS, offers a bogus refund and directs the consumer to a link that requests personal information supposedly required to collect it.

The publication also warns taxpayers that they are entitled to deduct only the fair market value of the car, which may be less than the "blue book" value from a used car guide. According to the IRS, some fundraisers have mistakenly advised all their donors to use the full value listed in a used car guide in every instance. To withstand IRS scrutiny, donors can use IRS Publication 561, Determining the Value of Donated Property, to calculate the value of a donated car.

Frequently, the goal is identity theft allowing the thief to impersonate the true owner. Such schemes which operate through the Internet are called "phishing."

Meanwhile, the union representing IRS employees is working hard to defeat the initiative, expressing concerns about privacy and cost issues, lobbying lawmakers to kill the effort, and urging taxpayers to drop out of the program. According to the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), which represents IRS employees, taxpayers may be hearing from private debt collectors about their tax bills as early as the end of August. "Taxpayers whose cases are turned over to the debt collection companies will be informed of their new status via a letter from the IRS, " NTEU President Colleen Kelley said in a written statement.

Under the law, taxpayers may instruct a private collection agency to return their account to the IRS for service. Instructions must be in writing and a copy of the letter should be sent to the IRS. The private collection agency is responsible for returning all of the taxpayer's records and information to the IRS. The NTEU has published a sample letter on its web site at www.nteuIRSwatch.org.

Bad Credit Loan Mortgage The IRS has seen an increase in these scams lately, many of which originate outside the United States. Recent investigations by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) have identified sites hosting more than two dozen IRS-related phishing scams. These scam Web sites have been located in at least 20 different countries, including Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, China, England, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, Singapore and Slovakia, as well as the United States.
