Manufacturers of six- and eight-channel models say they have all they need (for boating with no buildings or trees obstructing the view of the sky), yet the makers of 12-channel units claim an advantage. One other channel may be used to receive a constant stream of "satellite news," including satellite position changes and out-of-service warnings.
