The county applied to the state Agricultural Development Committee for funding for the easements and authorized two appraisals to be made on each farm, officials said. "Our Pinelands farm program is still in its infancy, but we are extremely encouraged by the response we have received thus far from area farmers, as well as the support from local officials, " said Freeholder William S. Haines Jr. "The easements that the county hopes to acquire through this Pinelands initiative will ensure permanent protection of these farms from unwanted development, regardless of any changes in zoning that could occur in the years to come."

Two more farms are now on the preservation list. The Burlington County Board of Freeholders saved the farms Wednesday as part of its farmland preservation program at a cost of $1.1 million. The board authorized the final agreements to buy easement rights that will bar all future development on the Arthur Puglia Jr. Farm in Mansfield and the Stephen Walder Farm in Springfield, assuring they will remain in agriculture.
