EPA Mercury Limits Wouldn't Meet Clean Air Standards

Bad Credit Credit Creditres The Bush administration plans to set limits for mercury pollution from electric power plants that are three times less stringent and would take 10 years longer to achieve than reductions critics say are required under the Clean Air Act.

Mercury is not some distant, faraway threat. Here in New Jersey, the fish in all our water bodies are so contaminated by mercury pollution that we are warned not to eat the fish. The Clean Air Act requires that the maximum available pollution controls be used to reduce emissions of toxic chemicals like mercury, and technology exists to reduce mercury emissions by 90 percent. However, this month President Bush changed the rules, declaring that mercury is not a toxic chemical and exempting power plants from the strong standards set by the Clean Air Act. Bush should put the health of our kids above the interests of the big coal and utility companies and drop this terrible proposal to weaken protections against mercury.

Bad Consolidation Credit Debt A copy of the Environmental Protection Agency's draft proposal dated Nov. 25, which was obtained by the National Wildlife Federation, calls for a reduction of mercury emissions from the current 48 tons a year to 34 tons a year by 2010 and 15 tons a year by 2018.

Yesterday, we saw unhealthy air quality levels in Connecticut, and parts of Massachusetts. "We are expecting Monday to be another unhealthy air quality day in New England, " said Robert W. Varney, administrator of EPA's New England office. "Although we have progressed in our battle against air pollution in New England, we continue to see days when the air is unhealthy when we get weather conditions like we're seeing today. On those days, EPA and the medical community suggest residents limit strenuous outdoor activity."

Bad Company Credit Repair EPA officials did not respond to a request for comment.

The majority of people are not aware of the poor quality of some indoor air. Americans spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, either at home or at their workplace, where they can be exposed to very high levels of airborne particles. In fact, the EPA ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health. Furthermore, according to the EPA, 100 times higher than outdoors. Most of the airborne particles cannot even be seen, but can be removed by an air purifier or cleaner.

Bad Card Credit Credit EPA officials have acknowledge previously that if the agency issued a rule under the Clean Air Act designed to achieve the maximum reduction possible with available technology, mercury emissions could be reduced to only 5 tons a year by 2008.

Remember the story about air toxins in Gloucester County being about 1, 100 times above federal standards Couldn't get much worse than that, could it Believe it or not, it could. A report released by the New Jersey Public Interest Research Group and state Sen. John Adler, Camden, reports that air toxins in Camden County are twice as bad. According to the study, a collection of about 200 chemicals that can cause cancer and other health problems are present in Camden County air at levels more than 2, 000 times above federal limits.

Bad Car Credit Loan Currently, there are no federal limits on how much mercury coal-fired power plants can emit. Power plants are the main man-made source of mercury, which is highly toxic and can interfere with brain development in children.

Critics say the EPA should regulate mercury under the provisions of the Clean Air Act, which call for much steeper and earlier emissions reductions than the agency has proposed. Christie Whitman, who headed the agency last spring when EPA staffers say they were told to forgo the normal analysis of the mercury proposal said Tuesday that she supported Leavitt's decision to order new studies. He has the option of publishing the findings before the deadline for public comment and well before the final rule is enacted, she said.

Bad Credit Loan Mortgage National surveys by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that 8 percent of women of childbearing age have mercury levels in their blood that could be harmful to the developing fetus.

Auto Bad Credit Loan The proposed rule is also more generous to industry than President Bush's proposed "Clear Skies" legislation, which calls for a mercury emission reduction to 26 tons by 2010.

Bad Credit Mortgage Refinance The EPA documents describe the proposed 34-ton reduction as a "co-benefits" level. That means the reduction could be achieved by installing new equipment to reduce two other pollutants, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, thus delaying the need for the industry to install expensive mercury-specific emissions control equipment until 2018.

Bad Credit Refinance The administration has proposed sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide reductions that industry officials have indicated are acceptable.

Bad Credit Mortgage Second "EPA's actions are a dream come true for energy companies and a nightmare for children's health," said Felice Stadler, a mercury expert with the National Wildlife Federation.

Bad Credit Loan Student Environmentalists sued EPA during the Clinton administration charging the agency had failed to enforce the Clean Air Act by not setting emissions limits for mercury. In settling that lawsuit, former EPA Administrator Carol Browner agreed to issue regulations by Dec. 15, 2003.

Bad Card Credit Until recently, it was presumed those regulations would fall under a portion of the Clean Air Act that requires toxic pollutants be reduced to the maximum level achievable with current technology.

Bad Credit Financing Frank Maisano, a spokesman for the Electric Reliability Coordinating Council, an industry lobbying group, said the EPA is acting properly by applying a different section of the act that allows power companies that reduce emissions more than required to trade emissions credits with companies unable to meet new requirements.

Bad Credit Home Loan Mortgage "We happen to think a cap and trade program will work a lot better," Maisano said.

Bad Credit Loan People Unless mercury limits are "flexible," some power companies will choose to switch from coal-fired power plants to cleaner natural gas plants, Maisano said. That could result in a natural gas shortage and drive up prices, he said.

Bad Card Credit Credit People Utility companies are concerned that even the administration's Clear Skies proposal of 26 tons by 2010 might cause problematic "fuel switching," Maisano said.

Bad Credit Guaranteed Loan "Thirty-four tons is more reasonable," Maisano said.

Bad Credit Refinancing However, members of the House Science Committee issued a statement last month following a hearing on mercury pollution that said they found "compelling evidence" of the health effects of mercury pollution and that it may take government regulation to drive commercialization of pollution reduction technologies.

Bad Credit Equity Home Loan "Past experience has certainly demonstrated that major advances in technology development follow regulation in many fields, often at much lower costs than initially projected," said Rep. Vern Ehlers, R-Mich.
