The two 'L's' battle it out, Luther comes out on top
Date 5/6/1999 12:00 AM | Topic: SportsWomen's softball confronted competition this past week with an aggressive double-header against Loras, carrying their record to 22-9 overall and 11-7 in the conference.
Luther stomped Loras with a 7-2 win in the first game and a close 3-2 victory in the second game on Wednesday, April 28.
Luther initiated scoring in the first game with one run in the third inning. The 1-0 Norse lead remained until the sixth inning when Luther batters whacked six runs in a single inning. Loras completed the inning, scoring two in the seventh, ending the game in a 7-2 Luther victory.
Jaime Rothbart ('02), Kathie Kempf ('99), Holly Wendt ('00), Laura Naslund ('01), Jennifer Gerzema ('99), Sarah Sanders ('02) and Katie Peterson ('01) all scored for the Norse, with Kempf hitting a double.
Naslund and Sanders drilled home runs at their only times at bat.
Luther women sneaked a number of stolen bases past the Loras defense. Rothbart, Wendt, Naslund, Peterson and Gerzema contributed to the team total of five stolen bases.
Winning pitcher Jennifer Lee ('99) served seven innings on the mound, allowing only two hits and two runs.
Luther triumphed in the second game against Loras as well with a score of 3-2.
The scoreboard was clear until the fourth inning when both Luther and Loras scored two runs.
The game remained tied surpassing the seventh until Luther scored the winning run in the eighth.
Wendt, Heather Mann ('01) and Naslund were the three who hit it home for the Norse.
Lee pitched five innings in the second game and allowed three hits and two runs. Jennifer Hohrmann ('02) came in for three innings and allowed only one hit.
Short-stop Rachel Nicholas ('00) connected for a triple and batted in a Luther run.
Luther had seven left on base throughout the second game.
The women of Norse softball took to the field for their final home game of the season on Tuesday, May 4 against number one ranked Simpson.
