Reports of Email Fraud and Phishing Attacks Increase by 180% in April

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 2004--

Bad Credit Credit Creditres Tumbleweed(R) Communications Corp. (Nasdaq:TMWD) and the Anti-Phishing Working Group today released the "Phishing Attack Trends Report" for April 2004, an analysis of phishing scam attacks submitted to www.antiphishing.org, the Internet's most comprehensive archive of email fraud and phishing attacks. Responding to a phishing e–mail may or may not lead to Identity Theft. However as a safety precaution, contact the three credit reporting bureaus and place a fraud alert on your credit report. Initial fraud alerts last for 90 days and each credit reporting agency has established nationwide toll–free number for reporting. 6285 EXPERIAN ( 3742)

A fraud alert is a special message that safeguards your information by displaying anytime your credit report is viewed. They notify creditors and lenders that they are to contact you or take reasonable steps to verify your identity before issuing new credit, increasing credit lines or creating new accounts. This makes it extremely difficult for thieves to get credit in your name and helps ensure that only you are using your personal and financial information. Fraud Alerts can potentially prevent up to 75% of the most commonly reported types of identity theft.

Bad Company Credit Repair Phishing attacks use 'spoofed' e-mails and fraudulent websites to fool recipients into divulging personal financial data such as credit card numbers, account usernames and passwords, social security numbers, etc. By hijacking the trusted brands of well-known banks, online retailers, ISPs and credit card companies, phishers are able to convince up to 5% of recipients to respond to them. The result of these scams is that consumers suffer credit card fraud, identity theft, and financial loss.

According to an April 2004 survey of 5, 000 U.S. online adults, Gartner estimates that 57 million U.S. adults have received phishing attack email and more than 1.4 million users have suffered from identity theft fraud, costing banks and card issuers $1.2 billion in direct losses in the past year. Moreover, the FTC estimates that if one figures in the amount of money businesses must spend on security software to stop the phishers, the damage to brand names, and the costs of mitigating customer complaints and litigation associated with insecure websites, the total increases to over $50 billion.

Bad Card Credit Credit In April, there were 1,125 unique phishing attacks reported to the Anti-Phishing Working Group. This was a 180% increase over the number of attacks reported in March 2004, and represents a monthly growth rate of over 75% per month since December. While the average number of phishing attacks per day in April was 37.5, analyzing this information on a weekly basis shows an increasing trend with a peak of 39.9 attacks per day in the second week of April. Further, this marks the first time that we've seen more than 200 unique attacks in a week -- occurring four times in April.
