Here's the thing: I am not, in general, a fan of tying health insurance to employment. Yes, there are advantages to group coverage, but these are a result of such a system, not a raison d'etre. It is just getting started:

A Dayton cop once told me a story that they swear is true. A man walked into a mini-mart, pointed a gun at the cashier, said "this is a robbery, call the police." The police arrived, he put the gun down, was put in the cruiser, where he said, "I'm having a heart attack take me to the hospital."
