Condors Being Inoculated For West Nile Virus

Bad Credit Credit Creditres Wildlife officials have launched an intensive effort to vaccinate California condors against the West Nile virus, which has killed thousands of birds on the East Coast and could possibly decimate the vulnerable condor population as the virus heads west.

West Nile Virus causes some victims to become seriously ill with encephalitis or meningitis, according to Cuyahoga County health officials. But many people have been infected without knowing. "Many victims have no symptoms and experience no ill effects from West Nile Virus, " Picker said. "Upon exposure, the chances of contracting West Nile Virus are rare." He also said that pesticides are sprayed 20 feet from a truck in the street and never make it to back yards.

Bad Consolidation Credit Debt "So far we have had only isolated incidents on the West Coast, but this has the potential to be extraordinarily scary, especially with only 205 birds," said Bruce Palmer, coordinator of the California Condor Recovery Program for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "We can't take any chances."

Brault said this makes it easier for the West Nile virus to adapt to rapidly changing environments. The study found that the death rate among crows exposed to the more virulent strain of the virus was 94 percent, compared to 31 percent among crows exposed to a less virulent version, AFP reported. In 2006, 4, 200 people in the United States were infected with the West Nile virus and 177 died. So far this year, only about a dozen deaths have been reported, but the number of infections has increased fourfold compared to the same time last year.

Bad Company Credit Repair The mosquito-borne virus has so far killed 4,133 wild or captive birds. Penguins, flamingos, eagles, hawks, owls, crows and waterfowl are especially vulnerable, officials said.

The most preventative treatment against West Nile virus for horses is a vaccination, according to the Department of Agriculture Secretary Charles M. Kuperus. "We recommend that horse owners have their horses vaccinated against the potentially deadly disease, " he said. Bruner said five dead crows have tested positive for West Nile virus, out of the 20 that have been submitted to the state for evaluation so far.

Bad Card Credit Credit In response, the Los Angeles Zoo has already inoculated 10 of its 32 California condors. The San Diego Zoo is vaccinating its condors. And Boise, Idaho's Peregrine Fund, which also breeds the birds, will follow suit this spring.

Meanwhile, Arkansas health officials reported the first suspected human case of West Nile virus in the state Monday. Dr. Fay Boozman, director of the Arkansas Department of Health, would not identify a man thought to be infected with the potentially fatal virus, Louisiana borderline. Four people in Louisiana have died this summer of West Nile, like symptoms and sometimes potentially fatal swelling of the brain. Most of the victims have been older people or those with weak immune systems.

Auto Bad Credit Loan Mali, for one, was not amused Monday when he was hoisted onto an examination table at the Los Angeles Zoo.

Bad Credit Mortgage Refinance The 20-pound condor, with red eyes and a 9-foot wingspan, stared balefully at the three women holding his sharp beak shut and keeping a firm grip on his scaly talons.

Bad Credit Refinance Cynthia Stringfield, a zoo veterinarian, looked down the bird's throat and felt his body for abnormalities. She drew blood from the condor before injecting the vaccine into his leg.

Bad Credit Mortgage Second The 6-year-old condor thrashed a bit, then became still.

Bad Credit Loan Student "We are focusing on the captive birds first because they are the reproductive ones," Stringfield said. "By early spring, we hope to vaccinate all the wild birds."

Bad Card Credit The experimental vaccine uses the DNA of the West Nile virus rather than a live or dead virus. This is supposed to reduce the chance of a condor getting sick or actually contracting the disease through the process. The Centers for Disease Control created the vaccine with DNA furnished by a bioengineering company in North Dakota that donated the vaccines used for the condors.

Bad Credit Financing The effectiveness of the drug is still being determined.

Bad Credit Home Loan Mortgage But giving shots to captive birds is one thing; doing it in the wild is something else. Condors live in remote stretches of the Grand Canyon, Big Sur and Los Padres National Forest near Fillmore. They are monitored by satellite transmitters fastened to their bodies. Tracking, trapping and vaccinating them will require a major effort.

Bad Credit Loan People "We will certainly give this our best shot. We have 21 birds out there," said Greg Austin, a director with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge in Los Padres National Forest. "The first 15 might be easy, and the last six could take six months. We would need vets to come up here to do it or to train us how to do it."

Bad Card Credit Credit People Susie Kasielke, L.A. Zoo curator of birds, said the virus was wreaking havoc in East Coast zoos. Colleagues have told her of penguins, flamingos and great horned owls dying. Other animals, such as zebras, have also been infected. Local zoo officials have not decided which other animals to vaccinate.

Bad Credit Guaranteed Loan Some birds, such as chickens and sparrows, don't seem to be susceptible to the disease, Stringfield said.

Bad Credit Refinancing The disease has been reported in 41 states, and health officials believe it could arrive in California by spring, though the dry climate makes it difficult for mosquitoes to thrive.

Bad Credit Equity Home Loan Six Californians have tested positive for the virus, but five apparently acquired it east of the Rocky Mountains.

Bad Credit Loan Payday "Given the size of the condor population," Kasielke said, "any infection would have long-term consequences."
